At Evans Bond we are focussed on helping people flourish. We do this by helping our clients achieve their financial goals through working alongside them and providing clarity to how they can achieve what they aspire to.

What it takes to succeed in life aligns with much of what you learn and experience through Barrracudas and swim school.

As a parent of a Barracuda and a volunteer I quickly recognised what the community of Barracudas teaches you is far more than how to swim fast. You learn life skills which equip you with the skills to achieve your goals in life.

You learn the value of persistence and hard work. In a world so focussed on instant gratification, through training multiple times a week you’re seeing the long term impact of consistent hard work that will serve you well in achieving your future goals.

You learn to look after your physical bodies, which helps you have the strength and stamina to continue performing not only in sport, but in other aspects of life.

Our systems and processes are predominantly cloud based, ensuring we are ideally placed to continue to serve the needs of our clients without any impact on quality or timelines.

Whilst this is a difficult time we also acknowledge the economic impact will hit many of our small and medium sized business clients. As such we are always available to support and provide advice and guidance to clients and others particularly as they may be planning for dealing with cash flow issues in the coming weeks.

So the people of the U.K. who turned up at the polls declared by a small but not insignificant margin that they would like to exit the EU. There’s been little analysis of the potential impact of this result for Guernsey in the run-up to vote for one simple reason: it’s impossible to tell.

That’s the problem with this result – those voting leave are not voting for a substantial package of agreements and treaties which will need to take the place of the EU for Britain. They have voted for an ideal which is just a very small part of the bigger picture. A picture which now needs to be drawn with the rest of the world.

Guernsey, a small, well regulated centre of excellence for finance is not part of the UK and not part of the EU. The relationship with the EU is a complicated one, governed by protocol three and as a “third country”. Effectively, Guernsey can trade with the EU freely without being a member. This is on the back of its status as a crown dependency of Great Britain.

Now the work is underway. As the UK negotiates its exit of the EU, Guernsey should work with the other crown dependencies to ensure its needs are met.

But what seems like a potentially painful and troublesome process also presents opportunities. Guernsey is often viewed as a tax haven, or low-tax jurisdiction and is subject to regular media dirty-linen-washing. Guernsey could come out of this process with an improved image. In fact, the Guernsey financial economy has been shown to contribute significantly to the UK and it is in Britain’s best interest to ensure the continued prosperity of this little island.

The immediate impacts of this vote will become clear in the coming days. The stock market slump has come as expected, and is unlikely to pick up during early trading. The markets fully expected a remain vote – the markets do not like uncertainty. Also the free movement of people around the EU is unlikely to be stopped immediately. However, the need for visas to travel around Europe in future may not be too far away.

France’s comments on the potential UK exit have indicated that this could well be an unpleasant process of negotiating the withdrawal. And whilst the UK contributes economically more to the EU than it takes out (net imports) there is unlikely to be a political desire to significantly change the current trade arrangements.

In Guernsey our politicians will have this issue dominate their term. With so much uncertainty as to the future trade and political relationship there is much to do. But in these early days it is very much business as usual.

We are working with the Association of Guernsey Charities in our search for a worthy project to donate £2,500 towards and also to find a partner charity who we can offer ongoing pro-bono accounting support to.

Cloud Accounting – Xero

Xero is a well established cloud accounting system that is aimed at small and medium size businesses.  The beauty of this system is its easy, intuitive use, ability for live review by your accountant, and the automated download of transactions from your bank.

Xero’s user interface is slick, and can be manipulated to provide the most important information to you prominently on a dashboard.  Invoices and quotes can be completed both online and through the app which is free to download, which gives you the ability to prepare quotes and invoices whilst on site.  This flexibility is a key component of the cloud offering.

In each case you can manipulate the documents prepared in Xero to complement your own corporate identity, maintaining a standard look across all your documents.

Documents can be uploaded and attached to expenses which saves time when it comes to year end when your accountant reviews your accounting records.

Additionally, your accountant can be given access which allows them to regularly review your records and post questions to you on specific transactions.  Saving time and money in the process.

In fact, we love Xero so much we use it for our own accounts.

Desktop Based Accounting – VT Cashbook

Although cloud accounting is very powerful, for some businesses either the quantity of transactions or the nature of business may mean the cloud is not an appealing option when it comes to recording financial transactions.  If this is the case, we promote VT Transaction+, which offers a free piece of software called VT Cash Book.  This comes with all the basic functionality you would require to maintain basic financial records to successfully run your business.

The main downfalls of desktop based accounting against cloud accounting is the lack of integrated transaction download from banks, the lack of portability of your data, and the lack of live accounting information for your accountant.

Additionally, desktop based accounting often will not offer the breadth of reports to keep on top of your business performance, though for many business there is sufficient information to continue to make informed decisions.

However, the fact that this software is free is a great positive.  Although cloud based accounting isn’t expensive, for some the additional cost may be unnecessary.  For a small annual fee VT Transaction+ gives you the full accounting software, including invoicing functionality and more detailed reporting.
